CEOs of IT companies: what qualities should they cultivate?

In addition to being a good leader, possessing communication skills, and making the right decisions

, among other things, an IT manager must possess and improve certain skills that allow him to ensure the success of his organization.

Regardless of the sector or industry in which they operate, every successful CEO must have certain characteristics: among other things, be a good leader, have communication skills, make the right decisions. In the specific case of IT companies, a prominent manager undoubtedly must possess these qualities. However, there are some special qualities these CEOs must develop to ensure the success of their organization.

"Good communication skills are one of them," says Andreas Wichert, Human Resources Partner at Equation Partners. "The CEO needs to know how to express the tangible benefits that technology can bring to customers and consumers in simple and accessible language," says the expert.

He also adds that he "needs to be able to translate his vision into every message for his employees, because if a company doesn't have the ability to create products that are important to people, it won't survive in today's hyper-competitive market. . This is the only way to build a real culture and not just a company. "

Wiechert says that IT managers who reach top management tend to differ from their peers in sharp intelligence, excellent communication skills, organizational insight, or some combination of market understanding and trend forecasting. "Additionally, over the past decade, the percentage of IT CEOs with overseas leadership positions has grown from 48% to 71%, reflecting the importance companies place on experience. International and the ability to know how to manage cultural differences in an increasingly globalized industry", says the leader.

For Natalia Vega, regional manager of IDC Chile, one of the core competencies that a CEO of an IT company must have is the vision of the future. It is primarily about "increasing the organization's competitive advantage and market share. It must seek new opportunities, as well as be able to adapt to changes, especially in the era of the third platform, which is associated with technology and innovation, as well as the development of cloud computing, big data, mobility, and social networks. Business", says the specialist.

She also highlights the need for these professionals to "have effective leadership, motivate them to work together, retain employees and attract new talent to contribute to the team."

For his part, Marcelo Solari, IT Human Resources Manager at Kibernum, points out that an IT executive should not only have business management skills but also be aware of the latest industry trends.

"Each CIO must have a central profile: listen to the market to anticipate what is coming, be able to communicate to create a value proposition for their company and community; and continually contribute to the company's strategy, not just to be a customer. Ultimately, it shouldn't be far from the important decisions of the organization," Solari describes.

In that sense, he adds, "The CIO must have a deep vision of how to do business and create value for others. If not, your leadership won't do much good. And for this, it will be important that their knowledge in the industry is up-to-date".

Evolution

Glassdoor, a website that catalogs information about the workplace, has published a list of the top 50 executives of technology companies based on feedback from its employees. The most striking thing about this survey, according to Wiechert of Equation Partners, is that there are CEOs in the top 10 who stand out not necessarily for their education or technical skills but for their leadership style, a strong passion for the business, and their interests. . proximity to customers and employees.

"This illustrates very well the cultural change that the IT industry has undergone," says the specialist.

For his part, IDC's Vega points out that IT companies are moving towards "Y organizations," that is, towards companies "with a culture of innovation, motivation, and creativity on the part of the workgroups. This is a new direction and goal for IT companies," he says.

In his opinion, today, it can be seen that in addition to many years of experience, which is undoubtedly a great contribution, "the most important thing in the CIO is the development of these skills."
